Hi, FYGS! I was wondering if you knew of any good graduate schools for Gender Studies (or Women’s or Sexuality Studies or any combination of the three) in the US?

That’s a really tough question. It depends on a lot of factors. What are you going to graduate school for? an MA or a PhD? Are you looking to begin an academic career or are you more interested in activism? what period and themes are you interested in? what discipline is your undergraduate degree? what sort of things are you looking for under “good”: location; facilities; international prestige; tight-knit community; availability of funding; job prospects; rankings; big name stars; etc etc etc… It’s a tough call. And i’m not the best person to ask, anyway, because although i have lived and studied in the US, i’m based in the UK.

However, this might help (and FYI this information has been available on my Links page for approximately 18 months… clearly i need to make its existence more prominent somehow!):

I hope this is helpful!

For women’s studies the best programs in the United States are University of Maryland’s Women’s Studies Program and Rutger University’s Women & Gender Studies Program. Both schools are highly competitive and accept 10 students tops. Both schools would allow someone to focus on sexuality.

However, I recommend looking into other programs as well. There are a few programs that would allow someone to focus on sexuality. I recommend looking into University of Minnesotas Gender, Women, & Sexuality Studies program. Ohio State University has a Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies program. Indiana University has a Gender Studies program where you can focus on sexuality. University of Washington has a Gender, Women, & Sexuality Studies program. Emory University has a Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies program

I wont lie, if you plan on making a career in academics it’s best not to get a degree in women’s studies or any variation of the degree. If you look at the people in the different programs, many of them will not have PhDs in women’s studies. Most will have degrees in fields like sociology, psychology, history, anthropology, etc. You can work in women’s studies departments without having a degree in women’s studies. If you want to go into activism, the degree in women’s studies will be more beneficial than a degree in traditional fields like sociology, history, etc.

University of Iowa as a Gender, Women and Sexuality studies major. I don’t know about a graduate program but I assume so.

They only have a graduate certificate.
